NonViolent Communication for Mediators

Getting to the heart of what matters

This workshop, specifically designed for mediators, is based on a powerful process called Nonviolent Communication (NVC), which is already contributing to dramatic transformations in thinking, speaking and acting in groups and organizations around the world. Based on humanistic psychology, NVC offers a powerful and pragmatic way of helping humans connect to one another. Using NVC in your role as a mediator by maintaining the focus on feelings and needs as they emerge fosters effective diffusing of anger, message detoxifying and mutual understanding.

As a mediation style, NVC-based mediation is “transformative” in that it promotes the recognition and naming of reciprocal affect in real time. It is also “interest-based”, though it focuses on universal human needs, which underlie value statements and measurable interests.

NVC-based mediation will enhance mediator effectiveness in:

  • Establishing trust with each party
  • Distinguishing facts from perceptions
  • Maintaining a climate of respect and understanding in joint meetings
  • Coping with intense emotions
  • Drafting doable and measurable action plans

Workshop objectives

At the end of the workshop, participants will have gained:

  • Further understanding of NVC philosophy and techniques;
  • An understanding of how to use NVC in a mediation context in both pre-mediation meeting and joint meetings;
  • Enhanced self-awareness on their tendencies as mediators.

Learning will be facilitated by short presentations, large and small group discussions, exercises and role plays
